Our first show in the new studio in premises at 7A Rose Street. Jazz was doing the undercoat for the new sign. Dylan C did a very nice Ninjatune set for two hours just before us. Much cheer despite the crappy grey wet day out in Auckland. Studio lighting was a kind of blue.
Nabeel:
King Midas Sound - I Dub
{vinyl does beat the 320 mp3. But 12"s are so expensive in NZ}
Cotti - Warrior Charge
{nothing to do with Aswad. Think the Dub might be better}
Joker & Ginz - ReUp
{shout out to Base's re-up and all the hard work done for that}
Falty DL - Human Shadow (Boxcutter Remix)
{I do love a bit of glitch. Female wisp samples are in these days}
Scuba - Bleach
{played that for Michael Jackson. Anything Scuba does these days is good. This him going Pole-r but halfway to Jamie Vexd's recent stuff}
Nosaj Thing - IOIO
{Spacey synths and elephantine grooves are big these days. Not P-, not G-, but PG-Funk}
Nick:
J-Live - One to 31
Villa Diamante - Emisor vs Dead Prez
Quasimoto - Tomorrow Never Knows
Villa Diamante - Peter Rap vs Ludacris
Anti-Pop Consortium - Capricorn One
Elucid - My Mayor is a Billionaire
Villa Diamante - Scuba vs Alexis & Fido
Nabeel:
The Seeds - 900 Million People Daily (All Making Love)
{RIP Sky Saxon. Really hit California on the head more than Jim Morrison. Sunshine space and claustrophobia. Maybe I'll play 'No Escape' next week}
I interviewed Scalper who has a new album Flesh and Bones out soon. Thanks to Dylan for coming in some of the way through and raising the level on Scalper's mic. We played and talked about 3 tracks from the album:
Scalper - Black Glory
Scalper - Threepointonefour
Scalper - Abacus
Strong character this Scalper, ready to strike at any time. What kind of dark knight of templar is he? What alchemy does he perform? He does have some mathematical preoccupations. In a long line there: Sun Ra, George Clinton, Eric B & Rakim, Rammellzee et cetera. Scalper is performing on King Kapisi's upcoming NZ tour. Special guests also include Maitreya and Tha Feelstyle. Details here
Izenzaren - Natri
{Legends of Amazigh (Berber) music. I found this here}
Shackleton - El Din 2
{Shackleton of Arabia, part 7. What doth tempte him to turn Turke?}
Earl Zero/King Tubby - Shackles and Chains Version
{Tubby gets them chains a rattlin'. 'They must be broken'}
Nick:
Villa Diamante - Juana Molina vs Benga
Tourettes - Good Guys Write Bad Music
Filastine - Marxa
Major Lazer - Hold the Line (Antennae Remix)
The Bug - Skeng (Kode 9 Remix)
DJ /rupture - In Front of You
Manaia Toa brought his bag of Kode9 records for signing at the gig tonight. He confessed to being a nerd without being asked.
